Speechless Sunday-Purple Lilac

The lilacs in the Hudson Valley are in bloom. These are photos from a lilac bush in my backyard. I found out that there about 20-25 species of lilacs which comes in a variety of colors, and can grow as tall as over 31 feet. So far, only my purple lilac is blooming since the deer seem to get to the other colors in the winter. This purple one was able to get really tall and that is why I am blessed with blooms.

From what I have noticed lilacs are a popular flowering plant in the Hudson Valley. You will find them in the average neighborhoods as well as on grand estates. At the Clermont State Park you will find a beautiful lilac walk.

I once attended an open house for an estate and one of the point of interest was the beautiful lilac garden, which featured a variety of colors.

It is easy to see why one would want to have this beautiful flower around. I am enjoying my purple lilac.

Pine Plains market update for April 2013

Pine Plains market update and homes for sale

Pine Plains market update during April 2013 showed 5 new listings, with price from $225,500 - $2,350,000. The homes were built between 1958 and 2005. Five of the homes had 3 or 4 bedrooms. One popular request made by buyers is that the homes they would consider buying should have more than 1 bathroom. Five of these homes had at least 2 bathrooms.

The Pine Plains market update for April 2013 showed one house went under contract. This was a Cape built in 1940 and was being sold as a short sale.

During the month 2 homes sold. The least expensive was a brick Cape and it sold for $182,000. The other was a 4000 square feet contemporary built in 2001 on 131 acres with Catskill views.

In April 2012 1 home sold this too was a contemporary but was only 1008 square feet on 45.36 acres and was built in 2006. A bit of trivia it was also listed by the agent who listed the home which sold for $2,900,000 this April.

Pine Plains Information

Pine Plains is a small Dutchess County town with less than 3000 residents.

The Pine Plains school district serves communities both in Dutchess County and Columbia County. It is not unusual to be asked how is the Pine Plains Schools. As a real estate agent I can't tell you that one school is better than the other; however I will help you find resources to assist with your research. If a school district is an important consideration when purchasing a home, make an appointment for a school visit.

Inside The Mount a monument to Novelist Edith Wharton

The Mount Lenox MA

The Mount in Lenox MA is a monument to Novelist Edith Wharton. During the tour I learned that only 5 percent of the monuments in the US are dedicated to women and The Mount was included in that small number. I especially appreciated this tour because you were allowed to take photos and this home was worth photographing.

About Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton came from a prominent New York family to which class really mattered. She had my sympathy; according to the tour guide she found someone she liked but was discouraged from marrying him because although rich he made his money in the hotel business and this was not acceptable to her family. In her day, working people were looked down upon by the idle rich. She spent a lot of time in Europe and learned several languages. She must have been a very organised person considering she wrote 40 books in 40 years. One of her books that is still used in the field of interior design is "Decoration of Houses" and the European influence is evident throughout. In 1902 she moves in to The Mount, with her Husband Teddy Wharton, a home she designed. The gardens were an intergral part of the design. Unlike the Victorian style of homes Wharton was interested in simplicity and symmeterical design and minimal furnishing. She would remain at The Mount for 10 years until her divorce and subsequent return to Europe.

Edith Wharton was known for entertaining small groups so there is no ballroom at The Mount. The dining room table was circular and accommodated about 8 people. As you can see this is a magnificent historic Gilded Age mansion so I hope you will get a chance to visit. The property is still undergoing restoration and tours are one way of raising funds.

The Archway

I am sure you will agree with me that this archway is irresistible. I love archways, they make such good photography subject.

Take this archway for example; I love the brown and white washed bricks and the arch is perfectly framed by green leaves. Then as you look through the arch you are tempted to follow the path.

The money raised from the sale is put to good use, you will notice the beautiful garden in Memorial Park. The club also offer a scholarship yearly to a Red Hook High School student.

Baba Louie's wood fired Pizza is so good diners come back for more

Baba Louie's in Hudson NY is a favorite place of my family. At first I was a skeptic, I eat pizza but it is not at the top of my list. Since that first time I have been back many times.

I think the wood fired thin crust organic dough is the key to why the place is so popular. Then there are the wonderful salad you can chose from.

Go ahead and take a look at Baba Louie's menu.

There are actually three location, the first was in Great Barrington MA, the second in Pittsfield MA and the third in Hudson NY, here are the directions to all three Baba Louie's locations

This restaurant is very popular but will not take reservations, so if you want to be seated quickly. arrive early. It is not uncommon to see lines on the weekend when many come up from the city to stay at their country homes.

At Baba Louie's expect reasonable prices and good food, you can have lunch or dinner.

Speechless Sunday - Bottle cap robot

This weekend I saw many interesting things including this robot made from bottle caps. Good to see these caps are being recycled into artwork.

I did a bit of research and found out that bottle caps are used in all sorts of crafting. Some even make jewelry out of the caps.

Bottle caps have also been used as a way to raise funds for schools.

Well mister bottle cap robot I hope you can do more than sit on a shelf.

Horses on a spring day -Wordless Wednesday

Today was another beautiful spring day, so it was nice to be out and about. One scene which caught my eyes were these horses grazing. I think even the horses were able to appreciate the good weather.

And I noticed the new leaves on the trees by the horses, what a great shade of green.

I do hope like these horses on a spring day, you are enjoying the outdoors.
