Speechless Sunday-Saperstein's in Millerton NY

Today small department stores are an endangered species.  There was a time when such a store was the centerpiece of a small town or village.

The Village of Millerton located in the town of Northeast in Dutchess County still has a small department store which has been around since the 1940's.

Saperstein's, a family owned store, is known for its service.   Customers have gone in to find an item and if not available efforts were made to get it from somewhere else.

A store like Saperstein's gives you an idea of what the community is like.  The charm of this village has not gone unnoticed.  This community has many second home residences, not a surprise because of the wide open space, and the fact that a Metro-North train station is nearby.  It is also close to skiiing resorts and just a half an hour from the Rhinebeck, Red Hook area.

These Mom and Pop stores are almost a thing of the past. I loved shopping them because of the service you receive.

One of our long time hardware stores just closed it's doors last week. It is such a landmark and I will be sad to see it go.

Jennifer I don't think that we have any more small family owned department stores around here.  We do have a hardware store, and a toy store that has been around for ever, but that is about it.

Glen I hope you are right, I like the personal service they offer.  The service is personal because the customer is not just a number

Diane yes they have certainly disappeared.

Bill such a shame.  So many landmarks have disappear.  I hope you go down there and get some pictures before it closes.

Ray things are working well again, so I have inserted the photo into the post.

George at least you still have a hardware store.  I wonder what small towns will look like in another 20 years?

Jennifer,

The small town department store is definitely an American icon, but it is fading away. Good post. :)

Jennifer, that is great that they are still in business.  We are on vacation in Panama City Beach Fl. and we are amazed at all the shops that are closed down.  The name is still there but the store is empty.

Hi Jennifer... stores like Saperstein's seem to be a dying breed.  It's wonderful to see stores with values such as Saperstein's are still surviving and hopefully thriving!

Hi Jennifer!  I'm with Steve--it seems that they're falling by the wayside and are soon going to be non-existent.  We must support our local small businesses and this is a fantastic way to share your passion for Saperstein's.  You should share this link with the family--it'll put a smile on their faces, for sure!

It does seem to be a dying breed, but I love seeing these stores who do well!

I love these type of stores and in Orange County we just don't see them really anymore and it is such a shame.
