Croquet anyone?

 Croquet anyone?

A Croquet tournamentwill be held at Clermont State Park on September 18th and 19th.  What is Croquet anyway?

Croquet is a lawn game in which the players drive wooden balls through a series of wickets using mallets.  Some have the game dating back to the 1300's, a game played by aristocrats.  So, it is no surprise that the wealthy residents of the Hudson Valley participated in this sport.

The tournament at Clermont State Park  will be the 28th  Annual Honoria Livingston McVitty Memorial Croquet Tournament.  Honoria was a descendant of Robert Livingston, a wealthy land owner who was involved with the introduction of the steam ship.

Croquetwas a favorite pastime of the Livingstons and Honoria was a member of the first Croquet Champion Team in Clermont.

You know, this would be fun to do!  I used to play croquet as a child and would enjoy a good croquet game in my elder years...now!  Wish I was in your town to join in on the fun!

I am more of a Bocce Ball woman myself. I'm thinking of building a court in my back yard even next Spring.

I LOOOOVE croquet. Have wanted to do a fund raiser, where everyone dresses all in white like they did in the Victorian era.

Jennifer, I have never heard of a croquet tournament.  We played as I grew up and then when our children were little we had a set.  It is now long gone but I still have fond memories.

Great photos and great information as usual.  What fun - some of the things we used to enjoy as kids are so much fun to re-do.  And, croquet was actually the setting on wimbledon before tennis became so popular!!!
