Hudson Valley Musing

Speechless Sunday-Turkeys out for a Sunday Stroll

It is not uncommon to see wild turkeys in the Mid-Hudson Valley.  I have had several occasions where I had to stop to allow them to cross the road.  Have you ever encountered a flying turkey? What an awkward sight,  I thought that at any minute it was going to make contact with my car and I ducked. Not a great reaction when driving.

There is actually a turkey hunting season to help mange the population Once I had a listing of a large parcel of land and while I was walking it with a potential buyer I came across several camouflaged hunters who really scared me. What if I had been mistaken for a turkey? Not a pleasant thought.

A month ago I saw a large flock of turkey and there were about 24 babies, I thought this might be a great photo opportunity. The mother noticed me and began to franticly call the babies who had wandered in different directions. As the mother's call grew more frantic it dawned on me I might be attacked so I made a hasty exit as I did not want to be the headline news. "Blogger viciously attacked by Turkeys as she tried to take picture."

So what's your best turkey story? and I am not talking about as food :)

In April, on my way to a CE class in a neighboring county, traffic came to a screeching halt...as 3 giant turkeys crossed the road.  Of course, I was too shocked to take a picture!  That always happens!  No way am I brave enough to approach turkeys on foot...I'm too CHICKEN!

Jennifer, I have blogged about wild turkeys in my area, San Jose, CA. I cannot resist taking photos and want to get as close as possible.

I take it that wild turkeys can be aggresive - I never realized they lived in the wild anywhere.   Thanks for the mini education.

Jennifer I have had wild turkeys around my house the last couple of years, but none this year.  Last one of them flew on top of my neighbors house.  The turkey sounded like a helicopter when he took flight.

Not too common around here although we did just see one the other day on a country road. Nice picture!

I don't see too many shots of Turkeys in the wild, thats a fun shot that they are out and about doing their thing.

How funny, you can't get between a mother and her babies....

Jennifer, Very cute! Great shot. I haven't seen any turkeys in NYC but there are fat geese in Morningside Park.

Jennifer,

Flying turkeys? No, not at all. As for showing property in an area around hunters...that would scare me to death.

Wow -- Turkey season is here!  One of my clients moved into their home and emailed that they loved their home, but they were quite sure about the neighbors who were making a lot of noise... they were wild turkeys!

Jenna you are smart.  The turkeys will usually run away but not when their young ones have wondered off.

Kathleen I get that feeling too when I see them; be cautious though.

Diane at one time this was not the case, the population was really down but by 1990 over 3.5 millions were reported to be happily running around neighborhoods :)

George they must have migrated to my area, I have seen a lot of them.  I wish they would not try to fly it looks so awkward.

Barb I suspect they like certain areas better.  It is important that there are wooded areas.

Morgan I am always thrilled to see them as long as I am not driving.  One actually flew into the side of my husband's car and it was an expensive repair.

Diane that mother's instinct will comes out even in animals.

Mitchell when they wonder out into a yard they like to know there are woods nearby for a quick escape.  Turkeys loose in NYC would be hilarious.

Lynda running into the hunter while showing the property was one of my scariest encounter which I hope will never be repeated.

Joan that is too funny. Do you think are there noisy turkeys in the neighborhood  should be added to the property disclosure?  :)  glad I don't hear them.

Neat picture of the turkeys.  I have almost had a turkey fly in my car window a couple different times.  Definitely a hazard when you are driving in the Hudson Valley!

Jennifer You were one wise lady - it is always best to give wild turkeys and Canada geese a very wide berth

Hi Jennifer:

I have a turkey story also...

A friend of mine rescued a turkey.  I called him her guard turkey.

He guarded her property and always chased us.

Jennifer - I absolutely love seeing flocks of wild turkeys in nature.  We have a greenbelt area near my home, where they hang out, with a population of deer.  I enjoy visiting them.

Very cool except the part about the hunters.  I don't think you look like a turkey :)

What fun to catch them in action.  I'm not sure about the hunter thing.  I'm guessing you'll be wearing red or orange from now on.
