History
Oldest house in Dutchess County. Built by Dutch pioneering settlers Jacob and Abraham Kip over 300 years ago (c. 1706). Listed on National Historic Register. Features huge beams of chestnut tree seeded before the discovery of America. The home was used as a tavern in the eighteenth century. The property was purchased in 1686 from three Native American chiefs. Located in Kipsbergen (now Rhinecliff) named after first settlers Hendrick and Jacob Kip, at the terminus of one of the main roads to Connecticut. This site became a thriving commercial landing, "Long Dock." In front of the house, the road is a part of the Sepasco Trail - a Native American trail that extended from Long Dock to the present village of Rhinebeck.
