Barns are an important feature of the history of the Hudson Valley. This Hudson Valley Dutch Barn in Red Hook, New York is a popular photography subject; and I have had the opportunity to photograph it in several seasons.
Because some of the farmland in the area was sold off, some barns have been converted for other purposes. However due to the historical nature of many of these barns, there are organizations dedicated to the preservation of this segment of American history.

Jennifer - Cool picture and history lesson. Those old barns present great photo ops.
Thanks for sharing the info about the red barns and the nice pic.
What a great informational piece and a beautiful photo!!
Living in Hawaii, I only get to see barns when I visit the mainland.
Jennifer, I love old barns and the one in your photo is beautiful. As a testament to early settlers and history, they deserve to be preserved whenever possible.
I am glad that there are organizations dedicated to the preservation of these old barns. I think saving our history is important. Beautiful picture.
I can see why this barn would be a great photo shot! Nice job!
Jennifer,
That is very cool...we have a round barn called the Leonard barn here in Pullman WA. I will have to swing out and take a picture of it...
Thanks, Jennifer. I was glad to read that some people are trying to preserve these.
Pretty picture Jenn! Getting ready for the upcoming wedding?
Nice photo...almost looks like a house. I grew up in Southern Indiana and there are lots of barns there.
Another great picture by one of my top two Active Rain bloggers who take very good pictures. Thanks for sharing Jennifer. Great pic.
Love the old barns, we have several in our area and they are fantastic
your friend in Charlottesville Virginia
Hi Jen,
Nice to hear some of these places are being preserved, love that photo. Btw, I hear you might be having some exciting news of a big wedding in your neck of the woods! Heard it this a.m. on GMA.
Jennifer,
What a beautiful slice of Americana. Very lovely - appreciate you sharing it. :)
Steve
Je..Great picture of America..
Thank you
Hannah
Jennifer. This is a great picture. I always crop my pictures to the subject, but I would be missing the great sky and landscape. I am glad you did not.
Jennifer - I feel like I'm stepping back in time and history when I look at that photo! I agree with Ellie, I'm so glad you didn't crop the picture.
Sorry I have not kept up with commenting, my body decided I needed 10 hours of sleep, and the truth is, when this happens I am not the one to win the argument :)
Hi Jennifer - Those are the kinds of images that say 'America' to me. Makes me think back to what it must have been like for the early settlers.
Out here that would be a "then" picture, and I would go out and take a "now" picture. LOL
Hey Jennifer, Barns can have some amazing unique history as well, and just the land they are built on. Thanks for sharing and great photo :)
Jennifer, that is a lovely picture. I love old barns! Very nicely done!
Jennifer That's a beauty - good you shot it now - it may not be there much longer :)
Reminds me of where I grew up..... serenity. :)

John such a scene makes one reflect on the past yet look to the future.
Dora and Vincent thank you for stopping by.
Wendy thank you.
Randy I suspect putting up barns would not be the best use of the land.
Mary I agree, barns are worth preserving
Diane history is worth preserving in different forms,
Joan I just catches my attention.
Lori I have pictures of barns of all shapes and sizes.
Debbie I won't be making any appointments for that area, I am staying away.
John I would expect to find many barns in the agricultural belt.
Lanre thank you you always know what to say.

This photo captures a way of life in a bygone era. As you indicated above, history can be preserved -and told- in many ways. Preservation whether urban or rural, allows us and future generations to experience history in a three dimensional manner.
The Dutch barn is a tangible reminder of the Dutch roots of the Hudson Valley!
Jennifer, you live in such a picturesque area and share such wonderful history and photos with us! The Dutch barn in Red Hook NY is well worth preserving. Thanks for the photo!
