Proud Mama

Jonathan FivelsdalOkay so I am a proud mama.  A week ago my son Jonathan graduated from Bard College with a major in mathematics.

Because of the existing economic climate this crop of college graduates could be facing a tough time however I suspect this could be a character building period.  A time when things are not just handed to you, and more decision making will go into the choices made.

So congratulations and best wishes to all you 2010 graduates and best wishes with finding a job.

And Jonathan one last instruction put that math degree to good use!

Spoken like a proud mama.

Vick thank you.  I think it is in the genes, my dad loved math, all 3 grandsons in college were majoring in math.

Dawn thank you.  With young people you just never know what direction they will take, and with the present job market best to keep all options on the table.

Hi Jennifer.  Congratulations to your son Jonathon, and a lot of credit goes to you too!  I'm sure he will agree with that.  I hope he finds a great job that will lead to a wonderful future for him.

Jennifer, from this math major (though MANY years ago), congratulations to you and Jonathon.

If he applies it to something computer oriented or teaches, he'll be OK.  If he's good in statistics, he might make it well as an actuary, which is an incredibly important position and pays pretty well.

If not, then he will need to be creative.  I've used very little of my math material that I learned in college.  However, it did four (4) main things for me:

  1. Learn how to follow directions, like a recipe.
  2. Recognize patterns, not just numerical.
  3. Develop logical arguments.
  4. Relentlessly attack a problem until it's solved.

If he's like me, the college might not have taught him job searching skills or helped him understand which types of jobs he is likely to find and succeed.

If he is UNLIKE me, then he'll adjust immediately.  A lot of places are eager to take on fresh graduates.  They're cheaper and easier to mold.  I would suggest for HIM to interview the company to make sure they have a strong training program, a sort of continued education.

Great luck, and congratulations.

Let me know if I might be able to help.

Jennifer,

Our economy needs an enormous amount of mathematical common sense, all across the board. I think your son will be a valuable asset to all. Congratulations!

Jen, one, congratulations to your son on the accomplishment. Two, with the shortage of math teachers here in CT, he could start off making serious money as a teacher...if he was so inclined...just a thought...

Gary Jonathon is a wonderful young man and I am sure he will be successful.

Chris thanks for the advice, there are many possibilities with a math major.

Greg Thank you. I expect him to make a meaningful contribution.

Steve we do.  Hard to believe I won't have anyone in school.  I will have to move on to the next phase in my life :)

Paula thank you I am proud.  Recently heard a report about how many students failed to make it to graduation, so I am thankful he went all the way.
