On my way from Albany NY I was on Route 9H when this train was passing by. Although this was what I would call a cargo train I was still fascinated by it. I like to see what type of cargo is being hauled.
We might not give it much thought however trains transport many of the items needed to keep industries running.
Did you know hauling cargo by rail is encouraged?

I grew up in a town that very frequently "came to a halt" because of a train, so to me they are often a nuisance. Of course I also learned patience. I do "undervalue" the great amount of product they transport.
Ginger I can't help being fascinated. On Friday after showing a few houses I passed an old abandon train, I so wanted to get a shot but the guy behind me was in such a hurry I didn't get a chance to pull over. I plan to get the shot on my next trip.
Steve I know how you feel, I have been caught at a crossing when I was in a hurry. You do learn patience, I do this by focusing on the types of cargo going by in each car. Trains are an important part of the over all transportation system.
We have 0800 trains, 3PM and 4PM trains - 3PM fast, 4PM slow, all three dissect the city of Titusville and stop traffic, so we have to plan our cross city trips around the train times. Oh... then there is the 8PM train. It used to stop me if I was running a bit late on my schedule for an 8PM dance lesson.
Trains can be fascinating.. They haul all types of cargo.... Including the U.S. Army. I took this photo just the other day.

Jennifer there once was a time when nothing moved unless by train, but a great deal of goods still makes that ride. Those look like drop bottom cars, which could be hauling coal. George is right they need a little spit and polish.

Ed This was carrying all sort of stuff. Maybe the rail has tightened its belt, so paint just will just have to wait...lol
Jennifer ~ We still have a couple of trains in Nashua... it is great to see them still operational. I think it is ashame we have let so much of the tracks go to ruin. We still don't have a train from So. NH to MA... and it doesn't look like it will happen any time soon... so off we all go in our cars!
I like your picture, Jennifer. You have a lot going on besides the train. I like how those cars in the background are framed by the tunnel.
Trains, barges and the Great Lakes freighters do the heavy lifting that our truckers can't do. Trains are NOT very fun to wait on, but they do make the economy go.
Hi Jennifer. Speaking of trains... one of the towns that we sell and manage property in has train tracks that haul cargo from various locations... we used to get caught by the trains so often until i would say, there's plenty of TRAINing living here! That same town has a railway that cargo can be transported across the country!
Hi Jennifer, Your fascination with trains is quite natural. For many in this country, they need to understand that rail transportation could be quite efficient as in Europe with high speed rail travel. One day, trains may return to be a major mode for moving the populous here in the USA

I was commenting on your post on fire safety and the photo caught my eye. I have always wanted to catch one of these trains and see what it is like to ride the rails...one of them dreams from TV I guess.

Jennifer - I'm smiling at Gary's comment about dreaming of riding the rails! I know it is supposed to be one of those guy dreams, but I've always had that dream too!
Those are hopper cars. They are usually used for hauling coal, ore, rock ballast, grain, etc. Those are CSX Transportation tracks out by 9H, which end right there at Claverack. Claverack has a lot of cattle and orchards, so those hopper cars could be carrying something related to them, such as grain for the cattle or fertilizer for the orchards. I think there also are some coal mines there in eastern New York.
I remember hopping trains when I was a kid. We would hop one and ride it to the next town and catch another train coming back. The world looks different from a train...
