Saugerties NY Historic Kiersted House

Kiersted HouseSaugerties NY Historic Kiersted House was built in 1727 and was the home of Dr. Kiersted who rendered services to participants of the revolutionary war.

This site is open from May to October on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-4PM.

When I visited recently I was speaking to a member of the Historical Society Board and he told me they actually developed a board game of Saugerties called Saugertopoly to celebrate Saugerties bicentennial this year, and as a fundraiser.  The game can be purchased at the Kiersted House and I have heard players have stayed up all night playing it.

Location: 119 Main Street Saugerties, NY 12477

Speechless Sunday-Take a bath and have lunch

I saw this scene yesterday and I just could not resist.  The outdoor dining set right next to the bath tub; yes take a quick bath and then have lunch.  On second thought, that is not a great idea since it is outdoors :)

So what do you find interesting about this photo?

Saugerties Art Studio Tour still time to catch it

The Saugerties Art Studio Tour started today August 13th and I had the opportunity to drop in on a few of the artists.

I first stopped by the studio of Michael Nelson, a photogragher who worked with film for over 30 years and is now embracing digital photography.   I found his work interesting and had the opportunity to see a field camera, one similar to those used by artists like Fredrick Church of the Hudson River School of painting.

Michel Nelson Studio

Stopping by the studio of Susan Sammis was a real treat, I liked her work with items found naturally, for example fallen leaves.  I especially enjoyed the tour of her workspace and the examples shown to me.  Technology does help to cut down on the time in completing a project.  Upstairs was the studio of Howard Goldson, Susan's husband.  I found the painting of strips he did intriguing, you could adjust the size of the painting by removing strips.

I also had the opportunity to stop in and see Isaac Abrams and Yvette Lewis.  I had a great conversation with Yvette related to a  painting on her easel; that of teapots and I happen to be a tea drinker.

It was a very pleasant way to sepnd an afternoon.  So if you are thinking of taking the tour tomorrow keep in mind these studios are spread out,so if you have a GPS bring it along.

Here were my take aways:

  • when taking photos it is not so much about the camera but about good natural lighting.
  • For an artist's studio space good natural lighting and high ceilings are a must.
  • Artists really love what they do.

Thanks for opening up your studios and in some cases your homes to share your art.

Tommorow the tour starts at 10:00 AM and run until 6:00PM.

You can pick up a map almost anywhere in the Village of Saugerties.

Saugerties NY one of the 10 coolest towns in the US

Congratulation to the town of Saugerties for being named one of the top 10 coolest towns in the US.  Saugerties is located on the banks of the Hudson River and has a very rich history.

Saugerties is known for it's antiques, the very popular Saugerties Garlic Festival, the Winston Farm (site of Woodstock 94) and Hits.

Visiting Saugerties I always enjoyed looking in the antique stores and was also captivated by the wonderful architecture.

Cantine Field is a 127 acres recreation complex where many events are held such as the Garlic Festival as well as a variety of sports.

I have listed and successfully sold  two homes that backed up to Cantine Field and was concerned that this could be a negative.  To my surprise both homes were sold quickly as I soon discovered that many of the residents wanted  a front row seat to the events held at the park.

One thing I discovered about Saugerties is that the residents really love their community and are eager to fill newcomers in.  When I had those properties listed near the Cantine Field I went door to door to tell the neighbors about my listings and everyone was welcoming and provided me with valuable information.  From this interaction with the community I even picked up another listing a year later from a lady whose door I had knocked on.

So if you want to get-away for a weekend Saugerties is a great destination.
