Are there Marinas in Northern Dutchess?

Northern Dutchess runs along the majestic Hudson River so it is not uncommon for someone buying a house in the area to ask: Are there marinas in Northern Dutchess?

You might think most people living along the Hudson have direct access to it, that is not the case.   When the railroad tracks were constructed at the time it seemed like a great idea to put them right along the river. Today, I am sure it would not have been allowed.  So, with that in mind most people now need to go to one of the Marinas to get access to the river.  There are a few exceptions, for example, in Barrytown, a village in the Town of Red Hook, the train tracks went inland, so, if you happen to have a home in this area you will have direct access to the river.

Worldless Wednesday-Ice anyone?

ice on the Hudson River

Wordless Wednesday-Ice Anyone?

When I am between appointments I like to enjoy a few moments alone.  Today I drove down to the docks in Rhinecliff and just watched the ice floating by. Amazingly, I found it soothing.  You guessed it; this ice was on the Hudson river.

Speechless Sunday-Summer Fun on the Hudson River-Rhinecliff NY

Summer Fun on the Hudson River-Rhinecliff NY

Today I took a drive down to the Hudson River in Rhinecliff NY and I could not believe the number of sailboats on the water.  Memorial Day weekend is certainly the kickoff to that summer season of fun.

There is much to do in the Hudson Valley and because of the majestic Hudson River water sport is big here.  In the photograph the sailboat you are seeing is the FIASCO it came in close so I was able to get a good shot.  Today was a great day for sailing the temperature was in the seventies with a slight breeze.

Rhinecliff Train Station Is A Station With A View

 Rhinecliff Train Station

Rhinecliff Train Station Is A Station With A View

This station is perched on a hill above the Hudson River and does offer a great view of both the river and Catskill Mountains.  With an overpass  over the rail line you can walk or drive down to the waterfront.  It is also located just a a block from the  Rhinecliff Hotel.

Public transportation is always of concern to local government.  Most of Dutchess County is served by Metro-North Trains, The Hudson line along the Hudson River and The Harlem Line in the Northeastern part of the County.  In Northern Dutchess we do not have Metro-North Trains,  instead, we are served by Amtrak from the Rhinecliff Station in the town of Rhinebeck. The trip to Manhattan will take you about 1hr. and 40 mins.

Amtrak service is certainly more expensive than that of Metro-North however many commute  from here daily to New York City's Penn Station.  This station is also used by many New Yorkers to get to their country homes as well as by faculty and students of Bard College. It is also a quick way to take a day trip to Rhinebeck.  You might also need to travel further north, the Amtrak can take you all the way to Canada.  Here are the four available routes:

Adirondack
Empire Service
Ethan Allen Express
Maple Leaf
