Leaf peeping by boat in the Mid Hudson Valley|Rip Van Winkle

The fall leaves bring tourists to the Mid Hudson Valley region. There are many ways to engage in leaf peeping, however, in this post we will be considering leaf peeping by boat.

Hudson River Cruises located at the Rondout in Ulster County operates the Rip Van Winkle. which offers 2 hour tours on the Hudson River.

The next logical question would be: When does leaf peeping begin in the Mid Hudson Valley? Leaf peeping will be at its best in Mid October and the Rip Van Winkle will start the 2 hour Leaf Peeping tour on October 11th.

This tour is available from Tuesday through Sunday with the cruise starting at 2:30 PM

How much does it cost?

Adults $21

Children 4-11 $13

Over 65 $19

Under 4 Free

There is a $2.00 coupon available on the website

Today was a sad day-Plane Crash

Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge

Readers of my blog know how much I love the Hudson River and the bridges over the river.  This bridge is the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge which connects Dutchess and Ulster Counties.

Early this afternoon I heard about a plane crash which occurred to the left of this bridge.  When you hear the news you are always sad, but it is worst when you actually know the person in the crash, today was such a day.

This house has been around since 1903 and as you approach the front door you will notice the nice wood carvings a reminder of the details common in homes from that period.  Step inside the living room where you will find a stained glass window and more woodwork. There are 4 rooms and a bath on the first floor.

There are four bedrooms and 1 baths upstairs.  With a walk-up attic and a basement there is much storage space.  During the warmer months the glass enclosed porch is a popular space to relax in.

At one point this home was a mother daughter setup and could be easily converted back.  The owners  made many upgrades over the last few years, most recently, new flooring in the office.

Outside you will find a detached garage with a second floor that could make a great artist loft.

This home is in a great location, close to major highway and minutes from major employers in the Kingston area; such as the hospital.   You are also minutes from fine restaurants.

Now where do I sign? I am a member of this family

The Cat

Today I was taking a listing and the cat of the house checked me out fully, even going so far as looking in my bag.

When we got to the point where documents were being signed he jumped up on a folder and looked me square in the eyes as if to say "Now where do I sign? I am a member of this family.

Speechless Sunday-There is something priceless at Walmart

Saperstein'sw Clad Catskill Mountain range

I'll bet this headline grabbed your attention. What could be so priceless at Walmart? How about the view?  I took this shot a couple of years ago from the Walmart parking lot in Kingston, NY.

This a a photo I personally like. It reminded me so much of a lovely landscape watercolor.  I could see Thomas Cole of the Hudson River School of painting sitting down and painting a watercolor of the snow-clad Catskill Mountains.

So, next time you are at Walmart you might just see something priceless.

Wordless Wednesday-Have you been to the New York Trolley Museum?

Trolley Museum

Trolleys at Museum

Trolley Museum in Kingston

These photos were taken in the late fall, at the Trolley Museum of New York located in the Roundout area of Kingston New York.

This museum is located in the old Ulster and  Delaware railroad yard.  There are about 30 trolleys, the oldest dating back to 1907.  The Trolley Museum  covers the history of the railroad in the Hudson Valley.  Rail travel was once a very important part of the transportation system in small communities. Then came the car and this system which connected many communities by train was abandoned.  While out and about in my real estate activities  I sometimes run into these abandoned tracks.  Some have now been turned into rail trails for leisure walking and biking. The fall foliage tain which runs along the Esopus Creek is  a great example of some of these old train lines being put back into service and the old rail beds being restored.

At the museum you will also find many old trolley photographs, see a video presentation. Besides looking at the trolley you can also get on one of these antique trains for a short tour along the Hudson River.

This museum is also located across the street from the Hudson Valley Maritime Museum and the Dock where you can take a cruise on the Hudson River.

We are thankful to the volunteers who maintain and operate this piece of history.

Wordless Wednesday-Musician at the Senate House in Uptown Kingston NY

Wordless Wednesday-Musician at the Senate House in Uptown Kingston NY

Today after a business meeting in Uptown Kingston I was walking by the historic Senate House when I heard beautiful folk music.  I decided to stop for a few minutes, and of course I wanted to know their reason for being there.  I was told this is something they do weekly on Wednesdays between 12:00-1:00 PM.  I actually saw someone sitting nearby having lunch and enjoying the music.

These are the little moments in a day that can lift the spirits.  So if you are ever around Uptown Kingston on a Wednesday stop by the Senate House and take in the music.    If the weather is bad you can find the group performing in the Senate House Visitor's center.

Wordless Wednesday-Street Scene Uptown Kingston NY

Scene Uptown Kingston NY

Today when I was Uptown Kingston waiting to sign some paperwork I could not resist taking a shot of such a glorious spring day.  Actually at almost 90 degrees it felt more like the middle of the summer.

In this area you can find many old homes, this is considered a historic district.  As a matter of fact the site of the first meeting of the New York  State Assembly was just down the street.  They met in Bogardus Tavern.

Speechless Sunday - Roundout Lighhouse Kingston NY

Roundout Lighthouse Kingston NY

On the Hudson River you do see many sites, once such site is the Roundout(Kingston) Lighthouse which sits at the mouth of the Roundout Creek where it connects to the river.

This lighthouse is open for tour from May to October, and access is via boats.

When you are through with the tour, you might want to stop at the Roundout where you will find a maritime museum, shops and many fine restaurants.  For example you can pull right up to the Steele  Restaurant in your boat.

I know it is cold right now but this is a great time to start planning summer activities.
