Speechless Sunday-The old Grey Barn

Speechless Sunday-The old Grey Barn

For  years I have driven by this old grey barn in Columbia County NY but never found the right conditions or time to take a photo. Well, I finally did.

A barn like this is a reminder of how important agriculture was to the economy of the region.  It is still important. However, during the boom years of real estate some of the large tracts of farmland in the region became housing subdivisions.  Seeing a barn like this makes me think of what life was like many years ago; hard work, but, with a sense of pride from watching the fields come to life or from experiencing the birth of lambs and calves.

Germantown NY

Germantown  NY was first settled by refugees from Rhineland Germany in 1710.  This town can be found in Columbia county and lies between Clermont and Hudson.

In the past this was once a big farming community but many of the farms are no longer in operation.   Now  Taconic Farms Facilty  is a major source of employment in the area.

Germantown is also a favorite destination for many weekenders and is located just about 100 miles from NY City.

Another great feature about Germantown is that it is located along the Hudson River so you will find many wonderful homes on its bank with terrific views of the Catskills mountains.

Recently an Indian restaurant opened in the center of town; this too has been a great addition to the local cuisine.

Indian food comes to Germantown NY

On Saturday night my husband and I drove up to Germantown to try the new Indian restaurant.  The setting was not like the typical Indian restaurant ambiance, it was more casual, which fit right in with the area.  As the sign clearly stated, it was an Indian America restaurant and deli.  I ordered the Shrimp Biryani which was a rice dish skillfully infused with various herbs and spices and I must say it was excellent.

The owners Paul and Henrietta D'Souza informed me that the grand opening would be on Monday at which time they would be giving away free meals served buffet style.  I stopped by to see how it was going and based on the comments I overheard everyone thought the food was excellent.  This restaurant will be an asset to the area by introducing a new cuisine and will provide the many vegetarians in the area with even more variety.

The menu offers tandoori, rice, vegetarian and other entrees and is rather reasonably priced. So, if you find yourself travelling north to Hudson or south to Red Hook be sure to check out this little treasure.

Taconic Farms

Taconic Farms is a large facility in Germantown Columbia County New York.  This is no ordinary farm, don't expect to find cows and rows of corns.  This is a place where serious research specimens are bred; yes rodents for research.  The facility is commonly referred to by the locals as the rat farm.

Anyway this is really serious business the research rodents are provided to to researchers all over the world and in one way are another has impacted our lives.

Recently it was announced that there would be a big expansion near Albany because of some colloboration with the University of Albany

The present operation in Germantown is very important to the community, I am positive it is the largest employer in town.  This was a farming community but many of the farms are no longer in operation so the Taconic Farms  contributed to the economy.

Germantown is one of the towns in my marketplace and its a popular destination for consumers coming from New York City seeking a second home.
