Upper Red Hook A Historic Hamlet-Red Hook NY

If you love history Upper Red Hook is a very interesting hamlet.  Take for example, the Thomas House - this home has been around since the 1700's  and was used in 1777 as a command post during the Revolutionary war, to keep track of the British Army; unfortunately the British did manage to burn portions of Red Hook as well as the Livingston Mansion in neighboring Clermont.

Can you imagine these walls survived the fire of 1777 - Livingston Mansion on the grounds of Clermont State Park.

So how did Upper Red Hook get its name?  I have been told it has nothing to do with the area now called Red Hook.  Upper Red Hook was  located 3 miles uphill from the Hudson River and from the Tivoli Landing which was formerly Red Hook Landing.

Upper Red Hook consists of Old Post Road, Pitcher Lane , Starbarrack Road, part of Spring Lake Road and several other small streets.  The area back then was a vibrant community, and Old Post Road was the major road to get  to Albany.   I recently spoke to one resident who has lived in the area for over 50 years and she pointed out that the area used to have two grocery stores, a butcher shop, a bakery,  a harness shop, a post office, a school as well as a couple of taverns.  I am pretty sure this was an area where George Washington slept.

How the area has changed. All the shops are gone as well as the post office and school.   On Old Post Road you will find several eyebrow colonial homes. All of the homes are close to the road which is not a surprise considering when the hamlet was formed.  Since preservation is a big issue here, keep in mind that if you are buying a home in this area there is a hamlet committee you will need to talk to before making certain changes on your property. This includes even putting up a fence on your property because they would like to preserve the historic nature of the area.

Not all of Upper Red Hook looks like Old Post Road; on Pitcher Lane you will find more open space and Grieg Farm the farm where I pick my blueberries.
