Saturday September 13 2007 was the annual Hardscrabble Day in Red Hook, New York.
Hardscrabble, what's that? As the story goes, it was hard making a living in lower Red Hook and it was not a significant area of the town so it was known as Hardscrabble. The Hardscrabble area is now the village and is the hub of operation for the town.
The day started out wet but by midday the sun came out and the festivity began.

The art-fest was held the the grounds of the Prudential Serls Prime Properties office. Apple crisp was also sold by agents from the Prudential office to benefit the Sunshine Kids. The Sunshine Kids provides fun trips for children with cancer.
I ran into Mark Payne of BackAcres. He grows and sells all types of ornamental grass and I know he has great products because I have purchased three different types in the past.
I then spent a few minutes speaking with Mary Dorian of the Celtic Cottage who indicated that because of the uniqueness of her products she gets repeat business.
Dr Ford Franklin of The Healthy Place also had a display. He is a chiropractor.

I spent time working at the Red Hook Senior table. The Town of Red Hook Senior Committee is concerned with issues related to seniors and we plan several seminars throughout the year to address the concerns of seniors. Some topics discussed were: Medicare, prescriptions and senior housing.
When I got hungry I walked across to the Red Hook Inn where I purchased an eggplant pita, that was very delicious.

There was lots of food and music, and people selling all types of wares; also hayrides , face painting, and at the very end, a parade.
I saw many people I had not seen in a while and of course I was asked about the state of the real estate market. I was able to give numbers on the local market since I make a point of reviewing the statistics regularly.
See you here next year.
