Hudson Valley Musing

So are you still doing real estate?

So are you still doing real estate?

This is a frequently asked question- whether I am in the supermarket, getting my car serviced or just having lunch in one of the local restaurants.  I could just say yes and leave it at that but I use the opportunity to explain why I am still doing real estate in the Mid Hudson Valley

People enter a profession for various reasons. I am a Real Estate Broker because it is something I really want to do.  I point out to people that  unlike the dot com companies that faded away when the dot com bust occured real estate will continue to be with us just like death and taxes.  And why would I say that? Well, the market may go up and down but circumstances change and here are a few reasons why real estate will still be here:

  • People get married and need a place to live
  • A growing family means there is a need for a larger home
  • Seniors no longer needing the family house need to downsize
  • Strong economic growth in an area
  • The need to relocate
  • Divorce
  • Death

So, real estate will always be here.  I use the opportunity to also point out that consumers are still buying and selling and yes getting to closing is taking longer but there are still transactions occurring.  I also direct them to my blog because I provide monthly  real estate data for Dutchess county.

I also point out that it is more than just about a commission check. Yes there have been times when I worked on a project for a whole year and the project falls apart and I never get paid.  In which other profession would a person do that?  I also point out that now more than ever the consumer needs us.  A real estate agent can be a great resource for many undergoing financial problems and about to lose their home or investment.  We provide a listening ear and then connect them with other professional help.  At times we have actually babysat homes for clients who are out of town, many times with no additional compensation.  Many real estate agents also work on projects to benefit the community.

So am I still doing real estate? You bet I am.
