Please just don't buy a home on price
Over the years I have seen some consumers shop for a home just based on price. These are the type of consumers that are all over the map and have a hard time making a decision
When purchasing a home there is much more to be considered. So here are some questions you might want to ask yourself. Of course, if you are working with an agent these should be covered:
- If you are not self employed you might want to ask yourself. How far am I willing to commute to work?
- How will I get there? is there access to major highways, train or buses?
- What are my recreational needs?
- Is the school district supporting programs important to my children such as music and art?
- How close are the homes?
- How close is the hospital and other essential services?
- Is there high speed Internet?
- How about shopping? Does it meet my needs?
- How quiet is the neighborhood?
- I am a city person. Can I really live in a farm community?
These questions were not just pulled out of a hat, but, are things most agents have dealt with when working with a client looking to purchase.
Take question 1, it is very important to know just how much commuting you can tolerate as the choice made will have an effect on your quality of life. I have seen buyers put the house up for sale after living in it for a short while because enough thought was not given to this.
How you will get there is also an important question and needs even more consideration if you live in a part of the country where there is a dramatic change in the seasons. Yes, in the winter you might have to tack on an additional half hour or more on your commute.
It is vital that you also pay attention to the family's recreational needs. Are there parks or, A golf course etc.?
Not all schools are equal. Some have extracurricular activities others are lacking, or do a better job for children with special needs. So you really need to know what your needs are.
Do you love to be close to your neighbors or do you want that open space? You should also take the time to drive around a community you are considering at different times of day to get a feel for the area.
Having essential services such as medical facilities is important so you need to consider this when making a purchasing decision.
For many, high speed Internet is even more important than some of the other items because many work from home at least some of the time.
Another mistake I have seen is someone moving from the city to the country. Maybe renting for a while might be the smart thing to do or at least spend some weekends in the area before buying.
Yes purchasing a home should be about much more than price.
