Hyde Park New York A Very Historic Town And A Popular Place to Buy A Home

Hyde Park New York A Very Historic Town And A Popular Place to Buy A Home

Hyde park is a historic town in Dutchess County New York.  It lies between two other historic towns, Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck.

Every year this town attracts many tourists.  It is known world wide because this is the home of the FDR Presidential LibraryPresident Franklin Roosevelt was the first president to make arrangements for his papers to be preserved in an organized way.  The 16 acre site was donated by his family and he was instrumental in the design of the building which was completed in 1940.

There are many other sites to visit while you are in Hyde Park. I have included pictures of some of the sites of interest.

VANDERBILT MANSION  This wonderful estate which lies on the banks of the majestic Hudson was the country home of Frederick Vanderbilt, brother of the Newport and North Carolina Vanderbilts. (The Breakers and Biltmore Estates)

This estate is an example of a "Guilded Age" estate. Like its Newport, Rhode Island counterpart, it is open for tours.  Once you have seen the house there are also beautiful gardens to appreciate- then walk along the Hudson River and just imagine how grand this site must have appeared to Henry Hudson.  In the distance the majestic Catskills adds to the grand view.

CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA: This former Jesuit seminary was transformed into the CIA in 1972 and many great chefs have passed through its doors.  Because of this wonderful institution many fine restaurants can be found in the area.

FDR LIBRARY: Established in 1940, it houses FDR's presidential papers. You can tour the library as well as the FDR home next door.  You can then visit Eleanor's nearby country cottage called Val-kill.

One of the many interesting buildings found in this historic town.

HYDE PARK FREE LIBRARY

HYDE PARK POST OFFICE: The post office was established in 1812. The current building was constructed during the depression and contains important WPA artist murals.

CRANBERRIES AT TILLEY HALL:  This building was renovated in the last few years and houses Cranberries, a coffee shop/deli.

Because Hyde Park is so close to Poughkeepsie it is a popular area for purchasing a home.  The real estate market in Hyde Park offers a variety, there are condo and townhouses, single family homes and luxury homes something to fit every pocket book.
